Do The Right Thing – Our Charities Update

One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is that we are in the business of helping people. We do so by trying to make the financial lives of our clients work as effectively as possible so they can then spend time enjoying the things that are important to them. Sadly though, there are a lot of people who struggle to enjoy their lives due to illness or circumstance, so we look to make a difference where we can in order to give back to those in a less fortunate position. All of that aligns perfectly with one of our guiding principles, which is very simply, to ‘do the right thing’.

2023 is shaping up to be a record year for our charitable efforts. Kicking off in February we hosted the DB Wood UK Cancer Research Winter Ball, at Kelham Country House, with businesses and individuals from all across the local areas coming to support and raise money. We raised over £3,500 in the fight against cancer.

Next, we had the DB Wood Newark Half Marathon in August. It was our third year as primary sponsors and is important not just for the charities we directly support, but for all others that want to use the event to raise money for their own causes. Over 700 people entered with the winner running a quite incredible time of 1 hour and 6 minutes. This event supports our local community and brings our fantastic town into the spotlight. Overall the event raised more than £250,000 for a variety of charities nationwide, and a special thanks goes to the race organisers and stewards (all 130 of them!) who give their time for free!

Then, as recently as last week we hosted our own marathon of such, with our DB Wood team completing our Annual Static Bike Ride in aid of The Children’s Bereavement Centre (JustGiving) right outside our offices. Working in pairs over 10  hourly slots our team peddled as hard as they could to reach a total of 400km. Kat and Oliver were especially happy as the total was completed just before their turn in the final hour, though they stayed around to soak up the praise! Just this event alone raised over £1,100 for a hugely worthy cause, and I’m sure will make a lot of difference to children going through hardship.

Finally, across this week and next we will be taking part in the Amber River Walkathon, where we sync up our fitness devices and try to record as many steps as possible over the next 14 days. Should we finish in the top 5, then Amber River will make further donations to our charities of choice, so we’ve all strapped our Fitbits to our pets and sent them out for the day…. not sure that’s doing the right thing, though it is for a good cause!

Overall, we are really pleased with our charity efforts this year, and extend a big thank you to our team for giving up their time to drive great outcomes for hugely worthy causes.
