Charities Update

Two weeks on…. the crowds have finally dissipated, the sounds of shaking buckets have ebbed, and the DB Wooders are back to walking normally. We want to say a big thank you to anyone who came to cheer us on in our annual static bike-ride and an even bigger thanks to all those generous people who gave money to help the Children’s Bereavement Centre. We were able to raise a fantastic £351.60 in total, for a great cause here in Newark, devoted to helping young children cope with the loss of someone close to them.

With the help of 16 riders and bucket shakers, we managed to hit our target of 500km in just under 11 hours! It wasn’t quite a DB Wood record, but it was a great effort in what was definitely our hottest ride ever. If you weren’t able to come and laugh at, sorry, cheer on the cyclists, it’s not too late to donate to this deserving charity. You can find the link to donate HERE.

Speaking of deserving charities, if you are local to the Newark area you will have no doubt heard about #Love4LittleLiam and his story. If not, Liam is a 5-year-old boy who has been diagnosed with DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma), a cancerous brain tumour that is inoperable and incurable. It’s a disease that only affects children under 10 years old and only 20 children develop the disease each year in the UK. Liam’s family are hoping to raise £500,000 as quickly as possible to explore the option of alternative therapies and treatments to help Liam live past his one-year prognosis. The individual therapies alone cost around £350,000. We are keen to help, and have taken part in various activities to raise money for Liam. Last week we joined many businesses across Newark in wearing yellow for the day and tonight we will be sponsoring and attending a Black-Tie Fundraiser. You can read more about Liam’s story HERE, along with the option to donate.

Crazy Efforts!

With the sun shining and Vitamin D thick in the air, a few DB Wooders have caught the fitness bug and taken part in some great challenges in recent weeks. Avid readers will recall that Dominic Harrison was planning to take part in the Ötillö Swimrun Sprint, a race consisting of running and swimming across the Isles of Scilly. Dom and his partner went on to finish 28th out of 99 teams, but he maintains that he was the 1st person to cross the line whose pre-race meal was a monstrous full English. I’m pretty sure he will have followed up with a post-race pint of Guinness or two. Well done Dom, cheers to you!

Two of our team, Rhiannon Sanders and Tracey Underwood, also competed in a regional Inferno racing competition this month.  This is  more widely known as ‘cross fit’ and tests both strength and cardio fitness across two days.  It was their first competition, so finishing 10th out of 14 in their age group was a great achievement. The obstacle race was their best event (finishing 4th) as they bobbed and bounced away from the competition. Great effort girls!

Fresh faces…

Finally, the start of July marks the beginning of our annual summer internship programme. After a diligent recruitment process that included two placement fairs, 50 CVs, 10 interviews and an assessment centre, we are delighted to welcome both Ecaterina and Charlie for the summer. Two of the finest interns from Loughborough and Bristol University respectively, have 10-weeks to show us what they can do, as we put them through their paces for the duration of the summer. Charlie is a straight Maths student with a specific investment focus and will spend most of his time learning from the likes of Alex and Dec in our Investment Committee. Ecaterina is an Economics undergraduate, with a wide-reaching skill-set. We are excited to help her develop knowledge across multiple areas, including significant time spent in our technical solutions team.

This month will also see the return of a familiar face. Evie Jenkins, one of last year’s interns, wowed us so much that we had to make her an offer to be our first ever placement year student. Specifically, she will return to our Business Insurance department, getting actively involved to assist our clients from day one.

Look out for more updates from all these guys as the summer progresses!
